Moab Multi-sport trip (Road riding and hiking)
Saturday 10/13 - Sat 10/20

Leaders: Ellen Chilikas and Ruth Berkshire

Overview: We'll spend one day in the Needles which is part of the Canyonlands National Park, 2 days in Arches National Park, one day in Castle Valley and one day in a slick rock canyon close to Moab.

Itinerary details: The Needles day will feature a stop at the petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock and the unique rock formations in the park itself. The 2 days in Arches will allow us to see numerous arches and other great rock formations. This is the gem of the Moab area - you could spend several days in Arches and still not see everything. One day will be in the Castle Valley area in a beautiful red rock canyon and the last day will be a slick rock canyon along the Colorado River. One day will be a free day with an option for a half day flat water (Class 1 and 2) scenic float trip down the Colorado River - this is not included in the trip cost and will be an extra ~$40.

There will be 5 activity days that have both bike and hike options each day - you can either hike or bike, or do a little of both. The road biking options are between 25 - 60 miles, will be on paved roads with narrow shoulders and include some *serious* climbing.

All the rides except for one (which is easy) are Intermediate - there will be no sag vehicle so riders must be self sufficient. The hiking options are on sand, dirt and slick rock trails and range from 2.5 - 8 miles each day. All are moderate - one has 2 sections with safety cables and a short ladder to ascend/descend.

Cost for the trip will $400 per person double occupancy and includes 7 nights lodging (hotel has a pool and an outdoor hot tub, daily continental breakfast that includes waffles, cereals, juices and hardboiled eggs; coin operated laundry, and an outdoor grassy barbeque area). Also included in the trip cost are: pre- and post-trip parties including snacks and adult beverages, several training rides in the Denver area the month before the trip, 2 happy hours with snacks and adult beverages, and one farewell barbecue dinner with adult beverages at the hotel. Park entrance fees and the optional raft trip are NOT included in the trip cost.
