April 2019 DBTC Ride Schedule

Wednesday, April 3rd:

10:00 AM FUN-H1or2-15to20-SW Meet Patty Gaspar (303-618-5069) behind the tennis bubble at Federal and Bowles. Depending on what the group decides we’ll head into Chatfield State Park and loop back. We may go check on the owls as long as we are nearby. Since it is early in the season, if the weather is chilly, watch for yahoo or MeetUp or check with Patty to let her know you are going.

REI Safety Program w/Ride and Dinner before 1:00 PM Leisure Ride H1-20-Central Meet Lin Hark 303-578-9369 at City of Cuernavaca Park for a ride along Cherry Creek, Dinner at La Cocinita and the REI Program Auto-Friendly Bicyclist after the ride. We will ride at a Leisure pace along Cherry Creek and back then meet for dinner at La Cocinita (4935 W 29 Ave Denver). Then go to the Safety Program at REI. You must sign up for the program. If weather is bad just meet for dinner and the REI program. Thursday, April 4th:

10:30-11:15 AM Special Event: Epic Ryde SloHi 4433 W 29th Ave, #204 (near Tennyson and 29th). Come join Mary Stewart for a Spin Class on Thursday 4/4/19 at a spin studio. This is a special class for DBTC members. This is for all levels and great music! Cost is $10 and includes a coupon for a drink at Growlers USA after the class – located on the 1st floor. Friday April 5th:

9:00 AM FUN-H1-10 to 15 9:00 AM SW Meet for Beignets (and optional breakfast) and coffee at 9:00 AM at Lucille’s in Littleton (2852 W Bowles Ave). We will leave at 10:00 AM on bikes if the weather allows (or on foot if the weather is too cold) to look for birds. Bring binoculars and/or a camera. This will be the last month we do these events until the fall - the ducks are starting to migrate north. Hopefully we will see some of the late migrators, like Cinnamon Teal and Blue Winged Teal. Saturday, April 6th:

10:00 AM FUN-H2-20-NW MAJESTIC PREMIERE RIDE Meet Jeff Krinsky (720-373-9107) at the Majestic view Nature Center north parking lot (north on Wadsworth to W 72nd Ave, west on 72nd, just west of Carr on the south side. THIS IS NOT THE ENTRANCE at GARRISON ST. nor 71st ST!) The ride will go west on Ridge Road and van Bibber Creek Trail, north on the new Blunn Trail and then return on most of the length of Ralston Creek Trail. The theme of this ride is a “Hello to spring” so a surprise to ring in the 2019 biking season will be provided to all participants during the Ralston Creek Golf Course break!


Sunday, April 7th:

10:30 AM FUN PLUS-H2-25 +-NE Meet Lise Neer at Cake Crumbs (2216 Kearney St. in Park Hill) for a brisk-paced loop through Stapleton & Northfield to the Rocky Mtn. Arsenal Wildlife Refuge (bikes aren’t allowed within the refuge but we can go as far as the visitor center). Check out the exhibits (incl. the Black Footed Ferret), gift shop and/or restrooms before heading back on neighborhood streets and a bridge with a view of Sand Creek. Monday, April 8th:

10:00 AM FUN-H2-25 SE Meet Ellen Fitzpatrick (720-209-2269) at Cook Rec Center, South Cherry Creek Drive between Monaco and Quebec. We will travel south and west on various streets, working our way to and through Wash Park then north to catch Cherry Creek bike path back to the start. Lunch after.


Tuesday, April 9th:

10:00 AM FUN PLUS-H4-20- W –LOOKOUT MTN CLIMB. Meet Cyndy Klepinger (303-725-1565 or matilda8@ msn.com) at the Wooly Mammoth Parking Lot, I-70 and Morrison Road to test your climbing legs. We will ride thru Golden to 19th Street and then start the climb at your own pace. We will regroup at the Buffalo Bill Museum and then descend down the back side to Hwy 40 and back to the parking lot. AS a reward for your accomplishment, the Club will buy you a coffee or ice cream at the gift shop!

11:00 AM, MTB, P2-3, T2-3, Green Mountain. Meet Chuck Caldwell (303-807-1562) at the Rooney Road parking lot for Lakewood’s Hayden Park on Green Mountain. DIRECTIONS: Exit C-470 at Alameda Parkway. Go west .3 of a mile to Rooney Road. Go north on Rooney Road for .7 mile. The parking lot is on your right. THE RIDE: Choose to either ride a loop to the top of the mountain or do an out and back on the lower trails. Those folks riding to the top will get to ride down the redesigned Rooney Valley Trail.


Wednesday, April 10th:

10:00 AM Leisure H1-20 SE Meet Jill McMahon, 303 888-0314(cell), at Cottonwood Trailhead So side of Cottonwood Dr, Parker, between Jordan Rd. and Parker Rd. for a ride south along the Cherry Creek Trail to the Pinery and return. Bring a snack, and money for an optional lunch following the ride. Since this ride is out and back, there is opportunity for a shorter ride for anyone wishing that option.

10:00 AM FUN-H2-23 SW Meet Patty Gaspar (303-618-5069) behind the McDonald’s at Sheridan and Hampden. We’ll head west but we will avoid going over the dam by heading up Kipling then over to C470 trail. There is a great downhill back to Lowell and Bear Valley. Lunch is in Bear Valley.


Friday April 12th:

12:00 PM FUN-H1/2-15to20 SW Meet at 12:00 P.M. just northeast of the Pedal Bike Shop in Littleton (2640 W Belleview Ave #100) for a ride to a local brewery. Will announce details on the ride a few days before on Meetup. Contact Ellen Chilikas at outdoorsdiva@yahoo. com with any questions. Must be ~50 degrees with dry pavement for the ride to be a go.


Saturday, April 13th: KICKOFF Applewood Golf Clubhouse

9:00 AM INT-H2/3-20 W Meet Lise Neer in the Applewood Golf Course parking lot for a ride to Dinosaur Ridge. We will head south, around Colorado Mills to the W-470 bike path and Rooney Rd. for a loop around the hogback. Let’s work up an appetite with a series of short (under 1 mile) climbs & descents, before returning via Golden and 32nd to celebrate the arrival of Spring! After Lunch FUN-H1to2-15 - Ever considered leading a ride but not sure how to go about it? Join Patty Gaspar for a leader training ride after Kickoff. We’ll just cruise around the area and maybe down to the river and back. Just a chance to get your questions answered and have a nice ride. Don’t want to be a leader? You are welcome to join us.


Sunday, April 14th:

10:00 AM FUN PLUS-H2-25 +-NE Meet at Cake Crumbs Bakery, 2216 Kearney St., Denver. These rides will be led by various ride leaders. Each Sunday, we pick a different route, and the distances vary from 25 miles up to 50 miles. We ride east toward DIA and Watkins, sometimes north to Brighton, southeast to Aurora Reservoir or Cherry Creek, or maybe northeast to Broomfield and the new Highway 36 Trail. Some rides may be faster than others; reminders and routes are announced on Meetup. The rides are coordinated by Doug Schuler and are led by various club members. Wednesday, April 17th:

10:00 AM Leisure Ride H1-15-SW Meet Cathye Woody (720-530-3940 cell) at the west end of the parking lot for the Broken Tee Golf Course (2101 W. Oxford, Englewood 80110) and ride to Fox Hollow Golf course and back on the Bear Creek Trail. Bring a snack for the ride. Lunch after the ride is optional at Panera. 10:00 AM FUN(10-12mph)-H1-20to25-SW Meet Patsy Venema (720.934.3498) at the east end of Fox Hollow Golf Course parking lot (13410 W. Morrison Road, Lakeontinue on the Platte and back, all paved trails. Lunch at the Den Restaurant afterwards if you like.


Thursday, April 18th:

9:00 AM FUN-H2-18-NW-+742’ Meet ride leader, Marilyn Choske (303-905-8510), at Wheat Ridge Rec Center in Wheat Ridge, 41st & Kipling., far north end parking lot. Ride west on Clear Creek Trail (CCT) to Golden, connect to Tucker Gulch west to Hwy 93, south on bikepath to Washington St with Starbucks stop for beverage/snack. Loop back to CCT and east to WR Rec Center. Some short hill climbs. Early-season ride = comfy 10-14 mph pace.


Friday, April 19th:

10:15 AM BEGINNING/FUN-H1-25-SE – Meet Cyndy Klepinger (303-725-1565 or matilda8@ msn.com) at Lowry Soccer Fields, Fairmount Blvd and Sports Blvd. near the outdoor restrooms on the west end of the park. We’ll ride a loop on Highline Canal and other bike paths to enter the Cherry Creek Reservoir on the east. Depending on the group, a loop around the reservoir is possible. Return on Cherry Creek and Highline Canal Path. This is a no-drop ride.

11:00 AM, MTB, P2,T2, Waterton Canyon. Take Wadsworth four miles south from C-470, go left where brown info sign directs, then about 300 feet beyond the Audubon Center to parking lot. Follow Jennifer Saxhaug eight miles to Lenny’s Bench. Extra option: add about three more miles if taking the Roxborough Loop from Lenny’s, P3-T3. Refresh at Virgilio’s Pizza (C470 and Kipling, northwest side).


Saturday, April 20th:

9:30 AM FUN PLUS-H2-18/23-NW Meet Jeff Krinsky (720-373-9107) for THE SPACE, TIME, 9/11 RIDE or THE HIDDEN GEMS OF BROOMFIELD! This adventure begins near the SE corner of Sheridan and 120th at the new Whole Foods in Westminster (1/2 mile east of Sheridan at Vrain and 120th.) (4451 Main Street 303-439-7000) We will take secret trails around Broomfield where we will experience three incredible hidden displays including THE SOLAR SYSTEM, a brief history of GEOLOGIC COLORADO TIME, and a 9/11 MONUMENT. (This ride has an escape option at the 18 mile marker for riders who run out of time and/or steam.) Possible lunch afterwards at Whole Foods.

10:00 AM FUN-H2-25 SE Meet Ellen Fitzpatrick (720-209-2269) in parking lot at Reynolds Landing (take South Santa Fe in Littleton south and turn right on Brewery Lane). This will be a circle trip riding half on road, half on bike path, all paved, starting north on the Platte trail, then east on Little Dry next to Dartmouth heading uphill to Dahlia. Then proceeding south onto Happy Canyon and west onto Quincy, and finally some downhill to Clarkson. From there south to catch Big Dry bike trail west back to the Platte and to Reynolds Landing. From there we can decide on lunch at the Brewery or nearby location.


Sunday, April 21st:

10:30 AM, MTB P2-3, T2-3, USAFA Falcon Trail. Join Bob Kochevar (303-870-6833) and other MTB group enthusiasts on this fun, approx 13.5 mile, singletrack loop trail which tours the grounds of the US Air Force Academy. It boasts long climbs, flowy singletrack downhills, and beautiful views as it crosses high prairie and low mountain woodland terrain. A couple of short, moderately technical sections add interest. DIRECTIONS: I-25 South to exit 156B, (Air Force Academy, North Gate), West on Northgate Blvd approx 1 Mile; then bear left onto Stadium Blvd and drive south on Stadium Blvd for about 1.3 miles; then turn right onto Academy Drive and go west for about ½ mile and bear right into the Falcon Trail parking lot. The trailhead is at the west end of the parking lot. POSTRIDE: We will have a picnic among the pines adjacent to the parking lot. Bring your favorite apres-ride, snacks to share, beverages and a chair. NOTE: Subject to US Air Force Academy access restrictions, ID is required. Auto access from the North Gate of USAFA only. Entry via car may be subject to a look inside your vehicle.


Wednesday, April 24th:

10:00 AM Leisure Ride H1- 15 - SE Cherry Creek State Park Meet Jean Stevenson 303-349-1596 at the Furniture Row shopping center parking lot on the northeast corner of Parker Rd and Quincy in Aurora. We will ride into the State Park and take a leisurely tour on bike paths and roads stopping to looking for birds and other wildlife. One mile on gravel road below the dam. Bring binoculars if you have them. Optional lunch after ride at the Emerald Isle restaurant on Parker Rd, hopefully on the deck with a view of the lake.

11:00 AM FUN-H1-15-NW Come join Linda Wheeler at Van Bibber Open Space at 5575 Ward Road in Arvada for a spring shakedown ride. Time to get back into shape for summer rides. Lunch after.


Thursday, April 25th:

9:00 AM FUN-H2-26-NW-+700’ Join Marilyn Choske (303-905-8510), at Crown Hill Park, 26th & Garland, in Wheat Ridge. Experience the sights, sounds, and, yes--smells--as you ride this NW Denver urban adventure LOOP ride. North to Clear Creek E, Platte River S, stop at Starbucks/REI, return via 35th & 26th Aves W. Some light road riding, most with bike lanes. Construction? Who knows? It’s always a surprise! Comfy 10-14 mph pace.

Saturday, April 27th:

1:00 PM, MTB P2, T1, Pueblo Mountain Bike Getaway – Day 1. Meet Jeff Baysinger (303- 969-9241) at the Quality Inn & Suites West in Pueblo West at 1:00 pm. Address is 77 S. Radnor Dr., Pueblo West, CO 81007. DIRECTIONS: Get there by turning west at the US 50 exit. Go about 8.5 miles. The hotel is on your left. We will drive from there to the Arkansas River Nature Center trail head. THE RIDE: We can ride east toward Pueblo or west toward the park. The distance out will be on the order of 8 to 10 miles or so, one way. POSTRIDE: That evening we will dine at one of the local restaurants recommended by the Pueblo area bike enthusiasts. If the weather is nice, enjoy the historic Arkansas River convention center walking park that night as well.


Sunday, April 28th:

10:30 AM, MTB P3, T3, Pueblo Mountain Bike Getaway – Day 2. Today Ron Reid will lead a ride to the wild Outer Limits at Pueblo Reservoir. Or enjoy a wide variety of green, blue, and black trails in the south area. These are trails on the extensive dirt trail network at Lake Pueblo State Park. Meet at the south shore marina trailhead. Note there is a daily use fee (about $8) to enter the park. Maps are available at the park entrance booths. Once again, dining will be in Pueblo for the evening. Of course, there will be a group happy hour first at the Quality Inn that night.


Monday, April 29th:

MTB P2, T2-3, Pueblo Mountain Bike Getaway to Canon City– Day 3. Check out from the hotel by 10:00 AM. Today the group will be heading west to the Canon City, Colorado area. Jeff Baysinger will be leading explorations to the South Canon City Trails, here is a link “www.joinfar.org/trails.html”. Most of the trails are blue rated at the upper side, or green on the lower side. After riding the Canon City trails, we will be eating a late lunch at Pizza Madness parlor in downtown Canon City. This is a place you can admire for art alone. Leave with your belly full of fun, returning to Denver about 3:00 PM.

Wednesday, May 1st:

10:00 AM Leisure Ride H1-13-SW Waterton Canyon Meet Jean Stevenson 303-349-1596 at the Waterton Canyon parking lot for a ride on a gravel road along the South Platte River in this scenic location. Photo ops abound. Wider tires are best but not required. To reach Waterton Canyon drive south on Wadsworth past Chatfield State Park and follow the signs. Optional lunch after ride at a restaurant on South Santa Fe Blvd north of C-470.


Thursday, May 9th:

Evening rides back! 6:00 PM-FUN-H1-18-SE Meet Dick & Lynette Shelton (720-934-9824) at Treads Bicycle Outfitters, 16701 East Iliff Avenue, just West of Buckley Rd. Evening ride pace is family oriented, helmets are required, dress for the weather, and remember to bring water, sunblock, etc. We’ll ride around Cherry Creek State Park and return to Peak to Peak Brewery for snacks and drinks. Easy climbs. These rides will continue weekly through August 29 (except July 4).
